LEICESTER RATHAYATRA 2009

Starts 11:30 am - Sunday, 2nd August - Humberstone Gate

Historic Event this year with 3 humungous chariots

This year Leicester citizens will experience for the second year running a three chariot festival, making Leicester once again just the second city in Europe to host this festival on such a scale.

The festival that is being commemorated takes place annually on the east coast of India in the town of Jagannatha Puri, and during the time of the Raj the British were so impressed by the festival chariots they coined the word "Juggernaut" (after the name "Jagannatha") to signify a stupenduously large vehicle.
